| In
2000, the Housing Authority's Lapham Park venture was a finalist for the
Innovations in American Government Award from the Ford Foundation and
Harvard University. This was the only City of Milwaukee program to ever
be selected for an Innovation Award and the only housing authority in
the country to receive an Innovations award. The Lapham Park Venture is
the first assisted living community in a public housing development in
the nation and is a cost-effective alternative to nursing home placement.
During 2000, this partnership saved taxpayers more than $1 million in
nursing home care. The Lapham Park Venture partners, which include the
Housing Authority, Milwaukee County, S.E.T. Ministry, Community Care for
the Elderly and St. Mary's Hospital, provide comprehensive services for
the elderly at Lapham Park to help them age-in-place. This model will
be replicated at Convent Hill during 2002.
Due to the closures and anticipated closures of nursing homes within Milwaukee County, the Housing Authority is considering a pilot program with the Milwaukee County Department on Aging to house displaced nursing home residents at the Highland Park Housing Development. Support services and medical care will be provided 24 hours a day to help these elderly successfully transition from nursing homes. The Housing Authority is also working with the Medical College of Wisconsin, which received a 5-year Community Outreach Partnership Center grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, to enhance community and family development among the Housing Authority's residents. |
