Lottery Establishes Official Waiting List for Future Housing Choice Voucher Assistance

MILWAUKEE — The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM) has completed a random lottery to establish its official Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program waiting list.

The HCV waiting list was open from December 15, 2021, through August 1, 2024. Due to the high number of pre-applications received during that period, HACM recently conducted a random lottery to select 5,000 applicants for placement on the waiting list. The lottery was conducted in accordance with HACM’s HUD-approved Section 8 Administrative Plan. Applicants were notified of their lottery selection status by email.

Families selected through the lottery have been placed on the official waiting list in a random order. At this time, HACM is not issuing Housing Choice Vouchers, and placement on the waiting list does not guarantee future assistance or eligibility for program benefits. Applicants selected for the waiting list should ensure that their contact information remains current to avoid missing future communications from HACM.

Applicants who were not selected through the lottery have not been placed on the official waiting list. Because the selection process was random, there is no appeal process. Individuals may apply again when the waiting list reopens in the future.

HACM's Public Housing and Project-Based Voucher waiting lists remain open and continue to accept applications. Information about available housing programs and future waiting list openings is available at hacm.org/waitlist.

INFORMATION FOR HCV WAITING LIST APPLICANTS

If You Were Selected in the Lottery

If your application was randomly selected, you have been placed on the official HCV waiting list.

  • At this time, HACM is not issuing vouchers, and no further action is required from selected families other than keeping contact information updated.
  • Placement on the waiting list does not guarantee assistance or eligibility for program benefits.
  • HACM is unable to provide individual status updates or position on the list beyond lottery selection results.
  • Your application will remain active for future consideration when the program resumes issuing vouchers.

Important:
You must keep your contact information up to date. While the family is on the waiting list, the family must immediately inform HACM of changes in contact information, including current residence, mailing address, email and phone number. The changes must be submitted electronically, via the applicant’s account on the website at myportal.hacm.org or in writing if that is not possible.

Failure to keep your information current may result in missed communications and removal from the waiting list.

If You Were NOT Selected in the Lottery

If your application was not selected, you have not been placed on the official HCV waiting list.

  • No further action is required at this time.

  • You may apply again when the HCV waiting list reopens in the future. Information will be posted at waitlist.hacm.org at least 10 business days in advance of the opening along with public notice by publishing the relevant information in suitable media outlets.
  • Since this was a random lottery selection, there is no appeal process.
  • HACM’s Project-Based and Public Housing waiting lists are currently open and accepting applications. More information can be found along with the link to apply online at hacm.org/waitlist.

Additional Information

  • HACM is unable to provide individual status updates or position on the list beyond lottery selection results.
  • HACM will notify applicants directly via the email address listed in the applicant’s portal when they are selected from the waiting list for further processing.

We appreciate your interest in HACM programs and your patience throughout this process.
